EDITORSHIP OF THE BRITISH CRITIC

This was the third year that Newman edited the British Critic, and again it was very demanding work. As editor, he suggested topics of articles and sources to his writers, corrected their submissions, and wrote articles. To Hope he explained: “If you can enter into a reviewer’s [an editor’s] feelings, you might divine that he first, on receiving an article, looks through it negatively, to see there is nothing which offends him . . .”28 He was careful not to offend friends and bishops out of respect and prudence, not out of fear. He likewise sought the right timing to publish any critical review. For instance, when H. H. Milman published History of Christianity, Newman delayed publishing his review of it.

Even though Newman worked long hours as editor, he counted on the help of his friends, especially Tom Mozley, Henry Wilberforce, and John William Bowden. All of the writers were anonymous, yet they invested a great amount of time and energy in writing the articles. Soon after Newman took up the editorship, the sales increased steadily. Newman’s position as editor obliged him to fill up the pages with spirited essays from his own pen, but one day toward the end of the year, he decided to give up the editorship. The decision may have been part of his desire to have more time to pray and to think about his position in the Church. He informed the publishers of his plans, and suggested that Mozley become the new editor. The publishers replied, thanking Newman for his excellent work and showing interest in Mozley as Newman’s successor.
